There’s a comfort and joy (dare I say) that emerges with music you’ve heard a million times. All of a sudden, you remember how deeply this sound once moved you. It instantly transports you to a time and place you hadn’t thought of in years. The familiar sound is that favorite person in your life, visiting you when you're upset, who knows that despite your resistance, what's best for you in this moment is the opposite of solitude. It's a reminder that you are loved, and you belong, despite all your quirks, deficiencies, and discomfort.
I think about this often, especially when I'm deciding what music to include in a live performance or track list for an album. This is why on refuge, you hear pieces you will definitely recognize, like Bach's Prelude in C, and Debussy’s Clair de Lune. Sprinkled in the mix are lesser-known pieces like Liszt's Paysage and Chopin’s Nocturne Op. 32 No. 1.
The familiar melody is a gift, a way to guide you to a place of peace. Once in this space, it's my goal to take you on a new journey with the lesser-known music, inspiring an entirely unfamiliar, fulfilling refuge.
